Civil War

I was fortunate enough to shoot the Civil War this year. OSU lost and we probably won't be able to go to the Rose Bowl. I got some great shots, though. More to come. (I'm digging the black and white again, probably thanks to Dave.)

The fierce rivalry between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State University Beavers becomes apparent at the annual Civil War football game. A Beavers fan grabs a lassoed toy duck from the sidelines.

OSU Stanford Volleyball Match

A guest services worker stands in front of two student fans at the Oregon State-Stanford volleyball match. Beaver volleyball fans are aggressively vocal: they verbally abuse the opposition from the sidelines, calling the players and coaches by name.
Stanford outside hitter Cassidy Lichtman goes for a ball during the third set.

Gymnastics

I shot a gymnastics exhibition last Friday. I got up in the stands for most of the floor routines. I attempted to isolate the gymnasts on the blue floor to get some formally interesting photos. This seemed to work: I might add one to my portfolio.

A Foggy Night

Last night was rather foggy. This is fairly rare where I live, and all the lights took on this fantastical glow. I had a chance to get away from the desk, so I shot these.

OSAA State Meet

My brother had the privilege of running at the state meet this year, so I decided to shoot the race. I'm rather fond of running and photography, and cross country is one of my favorite things to shoot. Its always very tiring: sprinting back and forth to catch the runners, lugging around a heavy camera. A little ridiculous, really, but I managed some nice shots. The lighting was nice. (No cropping on this shot, which pleases me.)

North Medford High School junior Drew Jordan crosses the finish line at the OSAA 6A Cross Country State Championship. Jordan beat South Eugene favorite Sammy Kirtner with a time of 15:55.6.

No Longer a Football Virgin

I shot my first (American) football game last night. It was a bit strange: there were lots of photographers running about with big glass, lots of video cameras. Walking to the game I was reminded of football's following in Corvallis: tailgaters set up tents everywhere, buzzing college students spilled onto the sidewalk, an old man puffed a cigar. I shot a 70-200mm and 300mm. It was a difficult: two cameras (my bicep is still twitching from lugging around gear), constant motion, people on the sidelines. It was difficult to judge where to shoot from. I’m told this is half experience, half luck.

I'm not very pleased with the results, but this is my first game. I'm big on the self improvement, especially when it comes to photography. I shot lots (500 something?) and, although most aren't in focus, lack decent composition, or miss the sport photo essentials, I have some interesting results. More to come.

Arizona State reciever Michael Jones reaches for a pass during the third quarter. The Beavers beat the Sun Devils 27-25.
