Cookies

I feel like I’m usually not good enough to take a photo like this. This was lucky. The composition isn’t the best, and there is an awkward metal pole in the middle of the frame. Still: a good moment, good expression, and great light. Unfortunately this will never see print; the mother didn’t want me to use it.

Habit

I have found that photography, for me, is becoming instinctual. I reach for the camera when I see something—a moment—and attempt to capture it. This is habit. This is good.

Lincoln City

I just visited a good friend who is in Lincoln City for a journalism internship. Check out his work blog here. The stuff he is doing is really eye-opening: multimedia stories, continuous blog posting, etc. I imagine this is the future of journalism.

It was good to get away for the long weekend, but now its back to the daily grind. I have a paper to write and projects to complete. I’m not really sure what I’m doing for the summer. This is unnerving, but I have some nice ideas.

Between Work

A good friend asked me to help her put together a drawing portfolio. These are a couple of nice shots that happened while photographing her work.

I was running through some old work, looking for pictures of my brother for my parents, and I came across these.

Some recent observations:

PhotoJ is not always about the best photo, per se. Journalism is not art.

The capacity for human violence amazes me (exhibit: cage fighting, soon to come.)

I am more persistent—and stubborn—than most people.

Spiderwebs and Leaks

I am usually not in to this type of photography. However, the light and contrast looked nice in this little spot. I was testing the exposure for a large format system. Looks like fifteen seconds at f/22 on TRI-X 320 shot as ASA 200 (without bellows compensation.)

The backdoor entrance to photographer Cory Reed’s residence. Reed discovered that water leaks through the walls into his basement room shortly after taking this photograph.

Pitcher

Oregon State starting pitcher Greg Peavey threw against Arizona State Saturday at Goss Stadium. OSU beat ASU 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Swine Flu

I wandered around Western Oregon for the greater part of the afternoon looking to to capture a microscopic virus (or the effects of it) in an image. No people were around, making the assignment very challenging.

On A Boat!

An Oregon State varsity rower hauls oars. The OSU women’s varsity 8+ boat beat Washington State by 2.91 seconds for a win Saturday at Dexter Lake.
